What is NLP?
There are many ways of describing NLP. In short, it’s the relationship between the mind (neuro), language (linguistic) and our actions (programming).
Neuro - The mind and how it works; we experience the world around us through our senses (e.g. visual, emotional, auditory) and we give meaning conciously or unconsciously to these experiences. This affects our behaviour and physiology.
Linguistic - Our language, what is behind it and how it affects our lives. The way we speak reflects the type of person we are i.e. our preferred sensory representational system. We also use language to communicate our experiences – have you ever considered why you click with some people and not others?
Programming - Our actions. Our internal programming is made up of thinking patterns that determine how we behave, make decisions, learn, what we do.
NLP allows people to reprogramme to achieve their desired outcomes.
The academic definition of NLP is ‘the study of the structure of our subjective experience’ the assumption being that all behaviours have a practically determinable structure.’ (Richard Bandler)
The Association of NLP (UK) explains NLP as follows:
"At the heart of NLP is a wide range of methods and models it offers for understanding how people think, behave and change. It offers a flexible approach which brings about positive, fast change in individuals and organisations and empowers them to adapt to an ever-shifting world.
NLP training provides the skills to define and achieve your outcomes or goals and a heightened awareness of your five senses, allowing you to remain flexible, on track and maintain rapport with those around you."
